Gardenscape Art Show and Sale

March 5, 2009

A sure sign of spring, even if the snow and temperatures don't seem to agree at this time of the year here. Gardenscape is happening at the end of the month (March 27 - 29), and I will have five paintings in their art show and sale. I always enjoy this event - helping with the set up and planting the demonstration gardens, the interesting displays, and of course, the art show, which just seems to get better every year.

Somewhere out there, spring is happening!

Irwin Greenberg's Words to Paint By

February 17, 2009

In today's Robert Genn's 'The Painter's Keys', he talks about Irwin Greenberg, a watercolourist, and his list of 'Words to Paint By'. It is a list of 100 ideas he has about becoming an artist. You can find this list below Robert's essay. The first of these is 'Paint every day.' This is such a fundamental concept and one that takes a great deal of discipline.

2009 - Off to a good start

January 2, 2009

On a snowy day, it is a good time to reflect on the past year, which was very busy and eventful, and look forward to what the new year might bring. So far, it is getting off to a good start. I have one of my paintings at a local designer studio, called Willow Studio. They put up shows of local artists, which is a very positive undertaking, from the point of view of a painter. Their group show, called Branching Out, opens Jan. 5 and runs to March 15. The studio is at 148 2nd Ave North.

'Pacific' - my upcoming show

August 22, 2008

I finally decided on a theme title for my upcoming show at the Circle Centre Galleries. I will have 7 pieces in the show, 6 of them new. I wanted to do some paintings with a west coast influence, so have been working away this summer to get ready. I am quite please with how they have turned out. I worked on the oil paintings first so that there would be adequate time for them to dry before varnishing and framing. I have two watercolours that need finishing, and they should be done soon too.

Mendel gallery members who are artists can each put in two pieces. This year there will be paintings, sculpture and jewelry. The show is open during the regular gallery hours. The coffee shop at the Mendel is a great place to sit and watch the river, and have a very good coffee and nibble. One of those nice corners of Saskatoon.

OSAC Adjudication results

May 25, 2008

This past weekend, I took part in my first OSAC adjudication. I was one of 16 artists in Saskatoon who participated in this biannual event put on by the Organization of Saskatchewan Arts Councils. It was a very interesting process, where we were critiqued by two local artists. There was a general critique of the whole show, which was held for the day at the Snelgrove Gallery at the University. We also had individual critiques on Saturday. I found it very useful.

This afternoon I attended a short workshop on how to market your art/self. It was put on by CARFAC Saskatchewan, a national arts organization  (CARFAC)that works for the benefit of artists. They put on various free workshops throughout the winter, and throughout the province. They also have offices in Saskatoon and Regina, and have lots of resources that members can borrow. Their website also has lots of information and resources.

Catching up

April 26, 2008

The past month has been a very busy time, and included three show. First came Gardenscape, where I had five paintings on display. Then came the Escape Artists show at the Art au Jus Gallery, then the Prairie River Artists annual show last weekend. I finally feel like I am catching up. Also, the painting class I was taking finished this week.

The shows all went well, although we had terrible weather on the weekend of the Prairie River Artists, which I think affected the attendance on Saturday. Still, we had quite a few visitors overall for both group shows.

Raise a Ruckus for CBC Radio 2 & Orchestra

April 8, 2008

Friday, April 11, at 10 AM in Saskatoon (and Regina), there will be a rally to show our difference of opinion on the upcoming changes (read evisceration) to CBC Radio 2 come this September. All the current daytime programming will be gone, to be replaced with 'light classics, pop and jazz'. The host we love will be gone, to be replaced by .. what or who? Also, the CBC orchestra, the last radio orchestra in North America, is being disbanded. Do you think the present government has an agenda it won't talk about - like everything else?

Paintings at this year's Gardenscape

March 3, 2008

I just got my letter in the mail that the 5 paintings I submitted for Gardenscape were accepted. So it is going to be a very busy couple of months coming up. I suddenly have a lot of painting ideas that I want to get on to. Also I was invited to donate paintings to two fundraisers, one for the women's health centre, and the other for the NDP party. So it seems that I am starting to get some recognition here and there, which is very nice.
